The Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM) at Diponegoro University (Undip) continues to develop natural-based innovations by following up on its strategic collaboration with PT St. Morita Farma. After signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on February 5, 2025, FSM Undip is now focusing on further research in utilizing natural technology for cosmetics and healthcare.

The role of chemistry in the development of natural-based products has become increasingly crucial, in line with the growing public awareness of safe and scientifically based natural products. With Indonesia’s rich biodiversity, FSM Undip sees great potential to create innovative products that are competitive not only nationally but also globally.

The Natural Products and Bioorganic Research Group at the Chemistry Program of FSM Undip has been a leading center for scientific research and product development. This group has successfully obtained various patents, including the patent for a “Blood Sugar Lowering Formula and Erectile Function Improvement,” which combines kefir, purwoceng (Pimpinella alpina Molk), and Javanese chili (Piper retrofractum Vahl). Additionally, they hold a patent related to the isolation of high-quality curcumin compounds that can be used in health and cosmetic product formulations.

In collaboration with PT St. Morita Farma, FSM Undip focuses on utilizing coconut oil-based liposome technology in hair care product formulations. This technology is expected to enhance the effectiveness of natural active ingredients in the cosmetic and healthcare products being developed.

FSM Undip has also developed various commercial natural-based products under the NatPro brand, such as Purwoceng Tea Bags, Bottled Kopyor Coconut, and Strawberry-Flavored Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) for children. These products demonstrate how research findings can be practically applied in everyday life.

The Dean of FSM Undip, Prof. Dr. Kusworo Adi, S.Si., M.T., emphasized that this collaboration is a strategic step in driving innovation and downstreaming natural-based products. With the support of advanced research facilities such as Thin Layer Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (TLC-MS), Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), FSM Undip is ready to become a center for natural product research development that contributes to industry and society.

Looking ahead, FSM Undip plans to strengthen its synergy with industry and the government to promote the transition from empirically based products to standardized scientific products. Through this initiative, Indonesia is expected to become a leader in natural product research and innovation on the international stage.
