The Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM), Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), officially launched the Summer Program titled “Integrating Science and Stewardship in Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Management” on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at the 6th floor of the Acintya Prasada Building, FSM UNDIP. This program is a collaborative initiative between UNDIP and the National University of Singapore (NUS), supported by the Laboratory of Ecology and Biosystematics and the Diponegoro Biodiversity Project.
The opening ceremony was attended by participants and speakers from various national and international institutions, and was officially inaugurated by Dr.Eng. Adi Wibowo, S.Si., M.Kom., Vice Dean for Resources at FSM UNDIP. In his remarks, he expressed hope that this program would contribute positively to the advancement of knowledge and foster international collaboration in sustainable coastal biodiversity management and conservation.
The program will run for seven days, from May 9 to 14, 2025, with core activities taking place at Karimunjawa National Park in Jepara, Central Java. A total of 49 participants and resource persons will engage in various field activities, including exploration of coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrass beds, coral reefs, and terrestrial habitats.
Participants will also interact directly with key stakeholders, including park managers, conservation NGOs such as the Elasmobranch Project Indonesia (EPI), and local communities. This interdisciplinary approach aims to enrich participants’ understanding of ecological, social, and economic aspects of coastal conservation.
The program features speakers from prominent institutions including NUS, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST, Saudi Arabia), Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang (UNIMUS), Universitas Mataram, and the MERO Foundation, Bali. All sessions will be delivered through hands-on activities and contextual field discussions, offering participants an immersive and collaborative learning experience.
This Summer Program serves not only as a platform for interdisciplinary and intercultural learning, but also as part of UNDIP’s commitment to strengthening its global network and affirming its role as a World Class University through meaningful contributions to sustainable environmental issues.
