Department of Chemistry FSM UNDIP Promotes Women’s Empowerment through VCO-Based Lip Balm Innovation

The Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM) at Diponegoro University (UNDIP) continues to demonstrate its commitment to integrating education, research, and community service through innovation-based empowerment programs. One such initiative was carried out by the Department of Chemistry FSM UNDIP through a program titled “Training on the Production of Natural Lip Balm Based on Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO)”, held on April 12, 2026, in Tembalang Subdistrict, Semarang City.

This activity targeted the PKK Women’s Group of RT 05 RW 01 as an effort to enhance community skills while encouraging economic independence based on local potential. The program was led by Prof. Dr. Dwi Hudiyanti, M.Sc., along with a team of lecturers and students from the Department of Chemistry FSM UNDIP.

During the implementation, participants actively engaged in both theoretical and practical sessions. The materials covered basic concepts of lip balm formulation, ingredient functions, simple production techniques, and product packaging. In addition, participants gained insights into business opportunities in natural lip care products, which hold significant economic value.

In her remarks, Prof. Dwi Hudiyanti emphasized that higher education institutions play a strategic role in ensuring that research outcomes provide tangible benefits to society. She stated that the program aims not only to improve skills but also to foster entrepreneurship and strengthen household economic resilience.

The use of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) as the main ingredient in this training is based on its natural, safe, and moisturizing properties, making it highly potential for development in the natural cosmetics industry.

The training atmosphere was interactive and enthusiastic. Participants actively discussed production processes, marketing strategies, and opportunities for developing community-based micro-enterprises. The high level of participation indicates strong public interest in practical, skill-based training programs that can be directly applied as an additional source of household income.

Through this activity, the Department of Chemistry FSM UNDIP reaffirms its role as part of a higher education institution that is not only academically excellent but also adaptive and responsive to community needs. Such community service programs are expected to continue as a tangible contribution to supporting community empowerment and sustainable development.
