The Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM), Diponegoro University (UNDIP), continues to demonstrate its commitment to expanding global engagement through international academic activities. On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, Prof. Drs. Sapto P. Putro, M.Si., Ph.D., Head of the Department of Biology and Chair of the Center of Marine Ecology and Biomonitoring for Sustainable Aquaculture (Ce-MEBSA), served as a guest lecturer at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Selangor.

Prof. Sapto delivered a lecture on sustainable aquaculture to a group of fourth-semester students. His presentation emphasized the importance of integrating modern technologies in aquatic farming while addressing key challenges and sustainable solutions. The interactive session reflected the students’ enthusiasm for global aquaculture issues and Indonesia’s innovations in the field.

Following the lecture, a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was held between Prof. Sapto and leading aquaculture experts from UPM, including Prof. Dr. Natrah Fatin Mohd Ikhsan (Head of the Department of Aquaculture and Director of the Algae Biota Technology and Innovation Research Center – ALBIC), Dr. Zarirah Mohamed Zulperi (Fish Endocrinology), Dr. Fadhil Syukri (Aquaculture Genetics and Breeding), and Dr. Muhammad Azfar Ismail (Post-Harvest and Processing).

This discussion laid the groundwork for a five-year collaborative research plan between FSM UNDIP and UPM, focusing on the development of productive and sustainable aquaculture systems. A key area of interest is the Floating Net Cage – Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (KJA-IMTA) system, which integrates multiple aquatic species within a single unit to create a balanced, low-waste ecosystem.

Prof. Sapto explained that this partnership follows an initial collaboration initiated in October 2024 during his meeting with Dr. Fadhil Syukri at UPM. He added that Ce-MEBSA is one of Diponegoro University’s Centers of Excellence, dedicated to science- and technology-based coastal and marine resource management. “We are developing advanced aquaculture systems like IMTA with a strong emphasis on green technology to support environmental sustainability and improve coastal community welfare, aligned with the blue economy vision,” he said.

In addition to his role as a guest lecturer, Prof. Sapto also served as a keynote speaker at the “8th International Conference on Food and Nutrition (ICFN) 2025,” held on May 22–23 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Ce-MEBSA FSM UNDIP was an official partner of this international conference, which explored “Innovative Approaches to Global Nutrition and Sustainable Food Systems.” The conference brought together experts from various countries to discuss recent advancements and solutions to global food and nutrition challenges.

In his plenary session, Prof. Sapto presented a talk titled “Comparative Study on Benthic Biodiversity as a Strategy to Ensure Sustainable Seafood Supply Chains and to Support Nutrition Security and Sustainability.” He highlighted the crucial role of benthic biodiversity in maintaining sustainable seafood supply chains and the use of biomonitoring in aquaculture areas to ensure marine ecosystem stability.

These activities are part of Diponegoro University’s World Class University (WCU) Program, which aims to enhance global competitiveness through international collaboration, research excellence, and the expansion of academic networks.

FSM UNDIP remains committed to supporting its faculty in building cross-border partnerships that lead to impactful innovations. Prof. Sapto’s visit to UPM not only paved the way for new collaborations but also showcased FSM UNDIP’s academic strength and dedication to addressing global scientific challenges.
