Exploring Medical Physics and Radiation Protection: Falya Giyassal’s Career Journey to Becoming a Business Development Specialist

Falya Giyassal, a graduate of the Physics Undergraduate Program at the Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM) UNDIP, class of 2018 who graduated in 2022, is now building an inspiring career as a Business Development Specialist for Radioactive Source Projects at PT Besindo Medi Prima, Jakarta. Her journey in the fields of medical physics and radioactive source utilization proves that consistency and deep expertise in a specific discipline can open extraordinary career opportunities, both nationally and internationally.

Falya’s professional journey actually began shortly after completing her undergraduate thesis defense. Through her experience on campus as an assistant for qualified examiner lecturers in Quality Assurance for various diagnostic and interventional radiology equipment such as CT Scan, Fluoroscopy, Dental X-Ray, Mammography, and conventional radiology systems, she had already developed a strong practical foundation. Thanks to this experience, she received a job offer through LinkedIn from Canon Medical Devices Indonesia (PT Murti Indah Sentosa). There, she was entrusted with the role of Quality Assurance Specialist as well as Radiation Protection Officer in the field of medical physics, a position that allowed her to build professional networks with experts from both Indonesia and abroad.

Her career continued to grow dynamically when she later joined PT Besindo Medi Prima. In her current role, Falya plays a crucial part in projects closely related to radioactive sources. Her responsibilities include handling licensing processes, utilization, and replacement of radioactive sources in Indonesia. Impressively, she actively collaborates with various national and international government institutions regarding the production and utilization of radioactive sources, particularly Cobalt-60 and Cesium-137, for healthcare and industrial applications.

Throughout her rapidly progressing career, Falya has achieved numerous remarkable accomplishments. She has played an important role in the procurement of radioactive sources for several nationally recognized hospitals in Indonesia. She also served as a delegate and Radiation Protection Officer during the installation of X-ray equipment in the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP), one of Indonesia’s major mining areas. Her expertise has also been professionally validated through various national and international certifications related to dosimetry applications in diagnostic radiology, as well as national certifications for radioactive source handling.

Reflecting on her university years, Falya believes that the knowledge she gained at FSM UNDIP has been highly relevant and essential in her professional field. Since her work directly involves radiation utilization and radioactive materials, the scientific foundation and curriculum she received from the university have greatly helped her remain adaptive, resilient, and capable of keeping up with technological advancements in the industry.

To FSM UNDIP students, Falya shares an encouraging message to always pursue passions that truly align with themselves. “Make campus a place where you grow and discover your true self. Never be ashamed to learn and help others, because every small effort will never go to waste in the future,” she said.
