The Department of Mathematics, The Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM) at Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) held a Visiting Professor event as part of its World Class University (WCU) program, featuring Prof. Dr. Nor Haniza Sarmin, a mathematics expert from the Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
The event, which took place on Tuesday–Wednesday, July 30–31, 2025 at the 6th Floor of Acintya Prasada Building, FSM UNDIP, was officially opened by FSM UNDIP Vice Dean for Resources, Dr. Eng. Adi Wibowo, S.Si., M.Kom. In his remarks, he expressed his appreciation for the successful organization of the event and emphasized the importance of international academic networks to support the advancement of education and research at FSM UNDIP.
On the first day, Prof. Nor Haniza delivered an academic lecture entitled “Computational Analysis of Topological Indices in Algebraic Graphs Derived from Groups and Rings,” which discussed advanced computational approaches in mathematical graph theory, focusing on the relationship between algebraic structures and graph indices—a field in which she is highly accomplished.
Meanwhile, on the second day, the program continued with a Manuscript Clinic focusing on the importance of scientific publications for students, academic staff, and institutions. In this session, Prof. Nor Haniza delivered a comprehensive presentation on the strategic role of scientific publications in academic development.
She explained that scientific publications play a crucial role at various levels; for students, publications are not only a graduation requirement but also serve as proof of competence, an opportunity to become the first author, and a way to increase chances of receiving awards and scholarships. For academic staff, publications drive the advancement of knowledge, support academic promotions, strengthen opportunities for research funding, and open avenues for national and international collaborations. Meanwhile, for institutions, high-quality scientific publications are a key indicator of enhanced academic reputation, achievement of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), increased opportunities for research funding, and talent development to nurture outstanding future researchers.
The event, held in the form of an intensive seminar and discussion, was attended by enthusiastic students and lecturers who actively participated in the presentations and Q&A sessions. The lecture and Manuscript Clinic delivered by Prof. Nor Haniza provided deep insights into how scientific publications and quality research can strengthen the position of individuals, faculties, and universities in the global academic landscape.
FSM UNDIP hopes that through this series of Visiting Professor activities, students and lecturers will be further motivated to develop research in mathematics and establish broader international collaborations. Additionally, this program is expected to spark new innovations and strengthen FSM UNDIP’s position as a globally competitive faculty.
