Handoko Ary Yanto, a graduate of the Statistics Undergraduate Program at the Faculty of Science and Mathematics (FSM) UNDIP, class of 2003 who graduated in 2008, is currently pursuing a career as a Data Analyst in a government institution. He serves at the Department of Communication, Informatics, Statistics, and Encryption of Semarang City, where he plays a crucial role in the region’s data management structure.
After completing his studies at FSM UNDIP, Handoko did not immediately enter the government sector. Instead, he began his professional journey in the private sector as a Junior Data Processing Manager at Deka Marketing Research. In the company, he quickly learned how to manage survey data workflows, starting from receiving field datasets, cleaning and recoding variables, to implementing strict quality control processes to ensure the data was ready for analysis. The challenges during the early stages of his career often came from tight deadlines and messy datasets. However, those valuable experiences sharpened his attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and cross-team coordination skills.
During approximately one year of working there, he consistently succeeded in improving data processing standard operating procedures and automating several stages of analytics. His dedication earned widespread recognition when one of the major projects he handled delivered accurate and timely results, significantly helping clients make strategic decisions. A major turning point in his career came when he was entrusted to lead a small team and act as the primary liaison between the field team and the analyst team.
Armed with a strong portfolio and extensive project experience, Handoko then decided to dedicate himself to public service by applying to become a Civil Servant (ASN) in the Semarang City Government. He was accepted as a Statistician and gradually transitioned into broader and more detailed responsibilities. His daily tasks include preparing and disseminating sectoral statistical data within the administrative area of Semarang City. The combination of practical experience from the private sector and strong statistical expertise enabled him to adapt quickly within the government environment, contribute to various priority programs, and become a mentor for junior analysts.
Today, Handoko has achieved an impressive milestone by serving as a Junior Expert Statistician in his institution. He is fully responsible for the overall management process of sectoral statistical data in Semarang City. This detail-oriented work is consistently carried out within the framework of Indonesia’s One Data Policy to ensure the integration and accuracy of public information.
Looking back on his academic journey, Handoko realizes that the knowledge and experiences he gained at FSM UNDIP became a highly important foundation for supporting his current role. During his university years, he was equipped with a strong understanding of statistical theory, survey design, data processing, and the use of analytical software. These technical skills are now directly applied in developing performance indicators, designing public data collection methods, and analyzing public service trends in Semarang City.
To FSM UNDIP students, Handoko shared a brief yet meaningful message: “Never miss any opportunity to continue growing.” He hopes students will always be proactive in seeking knowledge and making the most of every opportunity available to prepare themselves for a bright future.
